Celtic Win The Race For Irish Midfielder

Celtic Win The Race For Irish Midfielder

Dundee United have missed out on Derry City midfielder Patrick McCourt after the 24-year-old decided to sign for Celtic instead.

United manager Craig Levein was interested in signing the winger, but had stiff competition from English sides Norwich City and West Brom.

Last week it looked certain that McCourt would join West Brom for £100,000, but Celtic secured his signature on Thursday in a deal expected to be around £200,000.

"I`m thrilled and it still hasn`t quite sunk in yet to be honest," admitted McCourt to Celtic`s official website.

"There was interest from a few clubs, but as soon as I found out that Celtic were in for me, my mind was made up."

"I have always been a Celtic supporter and there was only one choice to make. It's an honour to join one of the biggest clubs in the world."

Craig Levein has been watching the Eircom League very closely in recent seasons, because he believes it is a good source of talented players at more reasonable prices.

Defender Sean Dillon was signed by Levein from Shelbourne in January 2007, with several other Eircom players being watched by United since then.

However, it could have been worse for the visitors as Declan McManus struck an upright for their opponents in added time.

On loan goalkeeper Harry Lewis had earlier frustrated the same player, while both Willo Flood and new signing Emil Lyng saw opportunities at the other end.
