Troubled Striker Rejected For Football Reasons

Dundee United have turned down an opportunity to sign Oldham Athletic striker Lee Hughes, but manager Craig Levein has admitted it was for financial and footballing reasons only.

Lee Hughes was involved in a hig profile drink driving incident in 2004, which resulted in the then West Brom player being jailed after the death of a man.

Earlier in the week, Dundee United were contacted by Lee Hughes` agent, claiming the 32-year-old was out of contract.

However, that wasn`t quite true, because Hughes still has another year remaining on his current deal with Oldham Athletic.

"I got a call from an agent regarding Hughes and was told he was out of contract when in fact he still had a year to run, so that was that," admitted Levein to the Daily Record.

"It was an unfortunate incident that occurred but that did not come into my thinking."

"It was down to footballing reasons and we're still carrying on our search for two strikers."
