Arabs net Man City keeper

Dundee United have signed Slovakian goalkeeper Filip Mentel on a three-year contract from Manchester City subject to international clearance.

The 20-year-old will be included in the Arabs squad travelling to Austria for pre-season training next week.

While arriving as a back-up keeper at the present time, Mentel is eventually expected to challenge Dusan Pernis and Stevie Banks for a regular starting spot at Tannadice.

"Filip is a highly promising young keeper," manager Peter Houston told the Arabs' official website. "That he's been at Manchester City for the last few seasons confirms his credentials, but obviously he's found it difficult to break through there given their presence in the transfer market these days.

"We had him at Tannadice for a few weeks last season and while he impressed us all greatly, we didn't think we would get the opportunity to sign him," he continued. "I'm therefore delighted that this opportunity has now arisen and we've been able to secure him for Dundee United.

"Filip will prove a great back up to Dusan Pernis and Stevie Banks and we also expect to see him challenge both of them, in time, for the first team jersey."

Have to say I was a bit worried about comments such as "United are playing Mentel at the back!"
Malpas
I can't say playing in the Scottish Premier League is exactly going to enhance his career - better than nothing I suppose.
Tudor
Any City fans know much about him or seen him actually play?
Malpas
I've never heard of him never mind actually seeing him play!
Tudor
Maybe he doesn't actually exist? He does actually sound more like a strange cartoon or comic book character. Or perhaps his name is an anagram of some weird subliminal message.
