'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Douglas conditioning himself well

Dundee United boss Peter Houston is delighted just how well recent signing Barry Douglas has adapted himself to switching to full-time training.

The 20-year-old defender arrived at Tannadice from Queen's Park last month after quitting his job as an air-conditioning engineer.

That required a steady progression for him into the harsh rigours of a full-time fitness programme - a stark contrast to what he would be used to after only training a couple of times a week as an amateur.

"He was feeling his groin a wee bit yesterday, so it was wise to let him work on his own, but I`d already told him I was going to take him out of the full training," Houston told the Evening Telegraph.

"That was purely down to the fact he`ll need time to adjust to full-time training, but maybe not as much as I thought because, so far, he`s been doing great.

"He`s a good footballer and, while I`ve signed him as a left-back, I might take this chance to move him one forward on the left and see how he does," he added.
