Thompson slams UEFA
Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has slammed UEFA after AEK Athens' pitch was ruled unplayable ahead of their Europa League qualifier second-leg on Thursday.
Thompson accused them of double standards over the switching of the tie to an alternative venue, and claimed it was completely out of order that the Arabs were forced to spend £50,000 to bring Tannadice up to required levels when their opponents don't even have a playable home pitch.
"We have heard nothing from UEFA so far. The only contact we have had has come from AEK Athens," he told the Daily Express. "It is a joke because UEFA came across in June and July to carry out a full inspection on Tannadice.
"We were forced to pay £50,000 to put new seats into the main stand to bring it up to scratch and yet here we are set to face a team who can't even play in their home ground because their pitch is that bad.
"It is a case of double standards," he added. "I guarantee that if it had been a Scottish team then we would have had the book thrown at us."
