Arabs exit against Saints

Dundee United exited the Forfarshire Cup at the semi-final stage after being defeated 2-1 by St Johnstone at Tannadice on Tuesday afternoon.

Danny Cadamarteri actually gave the home side the lead around the half-hour mark, but that was cancelled out by Scott Dobie just before the interval. Peter MacDonald then grabbed the winner shortly after the hour before home goalkeeper Filip Mentel later saved a Dobie penalty.

After MacDonald struck an early attempt wide for the visitors, it was Ryan Dow soon driving straight at Saints keeper Neil Duffy in reply. His opposite number Mentel then kept out Steven Milne from 25-yards before Dow set up Cadamarteri to open the scoring with a right-footed finish via the underside of the crossbar.

Arabs keeper Mentel then responded superbly to deny Ricky McIntosh on the volley, but was finally beaten just before the break when Dobie ran onto a neat MacDonald assist to equalise.

And it was MacDonald who was on hand to tap in a Steven May cross following a Cleveland Taylor knockdown on 62 minutes as the visitors took the lead.

Saints then wasted an excellent opportunity to add to their tally after Tangerines' substitute Davie Shaw bundled over Dobie, whose penalty was though successfully blocked by Mentel before May lashed over the rebound.

The Arabs tried to take advantage of that escape and the lively Johnny Russell had a late 25-yard effort turned over by Duffy.
