Tangerines swoop for Rankin

Dundee United have signed Hibernian midfielder John Rankin on a two-year deal following his release from Easter Road.

The 26-year-old former Manchester United trainee has actually been out of action since February after falling out of favour with new manager Colin Calderwood.

"John is a player I have long admired and someone I believe can come in and add quality to the midfield area of our squad," manager Peter Houston told Dundee United's official website.

"His energy and drive, along with his desire to play football, made him an obvious target for me as I look to enhance the squad for next season," he added.

"John's style of football and his industrious nature will quickly see him become a fans' favourite here."

Houston was particularly keen to bolster his midfield with a number of departures expected in the next few weeks.
