Rankin hoping to banish bad memories
Recent signing John Rankin is determined for a far better experience in Europe this season with his new club Dundee United.
The 28-year-old was involved in Hibernian's 6-2 mauling at the hands of Slovenians NK Maribor twelve months ago in the Europa League. That in turn prompted eight defeats for them in their opening twelve domestic games and earned their manager the sack.
But now the former Manchester United trainee is busily preparing for his new charges to take on Polish outfit Slask Wroclaw on Thursday.
"Obviously I was at Hibs last year and we lost convincingly over the two legs," Rankine told MailSport, reports the Daily Record. "I can't even begin to talk about how disappointing it was.
"The whole tie was dead after an hour. Losing 3-0 away from home killed us," he admitted. "We then went into the league on a downer and everyone saw the campaign that followed it. That's an experience I never want to live through again.
"So we want a winning start this time so the confidence carries forward into the league."
