Midfielder could return

Midfielder could return

Midfielder Danny Swanson could start for Dundee United in their opening SPL game against Kilmarnock at Tannadice.

The 24-year-old appeared late on in the midweek Europa League qualifier against Slask Wroclaw after recovering from a long-standing back problem. However, fellow midfielder Scott Robertson is definitely ruled out, while summer recruits Willo Flood, John Rankin and Gary Mackay-Steven are all in the squad.

"I went to see them [Kilmarnock] play Preston the other night and the coaching staff have been watching them throughout pre-season," manager Peter Houston told The Courier. "They have a lot of new faces but what struck me was the experience they have in their side.

"They were able to make eight changes and every one was a first-team player," he added. "They will be out to get their season off to a flying start and that is our aim as well so we will be hoping to continue where we left off against Slask."

Kilmarnock are missing three of their own summer arrivals, Danny Racchi, Danny Buijs and Paul Heffernan, due to minor knocks. Goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola is also unavailable but Ben Hutchinson should be involved after receiving international clearance.

Boss pleased to get through

Manager Ray McKinnon was pleased to get through against Queen of the South but not particularly happy with the second-half performance.

Queen of the South 2 Dundee United 3

Dundee United took command of their Challenge Cup semi-final with three first-half goals before hosts Queen of the South staged a late rally.

Charlie Telfer and Scott Fraser both netted inside eleven minutes for the visitors and on loan forward Tony Andreu then added a delightful third.

Stephen Dobbie managed a reply early in the second period and Derek Lyle grabbed another during injury-time - but it's United meeting either St Mirren or The New Saints in the final.
