United ready to appeal against fine

Dundee United are considering an appeal against a UEFA fine following a supporter invading the pitch during their Europa League qualifier with Slask Wroclaw at Tannadice in July.

The Tayside club have been handed a 5,000 euro penalty described by chairman Stephen Thompson as "ridiculous."

"We will wait until UEFA furnish us with their reasons for the decision before deciding whether to appeal or not," he told BBC Scotland. "It's ridiculous, especially when you consider everything else that went on surrounding the game."

United eventually won the contest 3-2 but went out on aggregate and there were violent clashes in the city immediately following the game.

"It is quite incredible that some Polish fans cause trouble throughout the city centre, with extra police drafted in from other parts of the country to deal with them - yet nothing has happened about that," continued Thompson. "I am disgusted by the whole thing. Our club does not have a blemish on our record of playing 40 years in Europe.

"The fan walked onto the park picked up up a bit of paper or something and walked straight back off again."
