Defender confident of progress

Garry Kenneth believes there are still plenty of reasons for optimism as Dundee United prepare to face Rangers at the weekend.

The Tangerines have already accounted for the Glasgow side in the Scottish Cup this season before suffering a defeat to their arch-rivals Celtic in the same competition at the weekend.

However, Kenneth was preferring instead to look ahead, although with memories of the recent Ibrox triumph still no doubt fresh in his mind.

"Even though they have their problems they are still a very good side with lots of international players," Kenneth told the Dundee Courier. "So we know we are going to have to produce the kind of performance we showed in the first half-hour against Celtic.

"We want to consolidate in the top six and still believe we can catch Motherwell for third spot," he added. "That is our aim so we have to get back to what we have been doing in the last few months."

Meanwhile, manager Peter Houston was still waiting to determine the full extent of fellow defender Gavin Gunning's back injury during the Celtic loss.
