Defender 'distraught' at red card

Defender 'distraught' at red card

Robbie Neilson is "absolutely distraught" over his red card at the weekend, according to Dundee United manager Peter Houston.

The vastly experienced former Hearts defender was dismissed following an elbowed first-half challenge on Celtic's Greek international striker Georgios Samaras. It proved decisive as the current holders eventually romped away to a comfortable 4-0 Scottish Cup quarter-final victory at Tannadice.

Neilson, 31, now faces a two-match suspension ruling him out of forthcoming SPL games against Rangers and Hibernian, in addition to another Scottish Cup tie.

"Robbie was absolutely distraught at being sent off against Celtic," Houston told the Dundee Courier. "There's nothing malicious in Robbie Neilson. He's not that type of player, but he did catch the Celtic player so it was a red card.

"Robbie has been in the SPL for a long, long time," he added. "If you ask any player I don't think there's one who would come out and call him a malicious, dirty player. Yes, he caught him and deserved to get sent off, but it's a one-off occasion."
