Midfielder keen for proper run

Dundee United midfielder John Rankin is keen to avoid the big guns and go on a proper European run this coming season.

The Tangerines have failed to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League in their previous couple of attempts after defeats to AEK Athens and Slask Wroclaw.

But having finished fourth in the table last season, United now have another opportunity to firmly make their mark in the competition.

"I can't wait for Europe this season," Rankin admitted to the Daily Record. "All the guys feel we should have won our last Euro games and we are hoping we get a decent draw.

"We've talked about it and if we want to land the likes of Liverpool or Inter Milan - and the answer to that is 'No'," he added. "It is great playing in the big glamour games - but we feel we should make up for not winning our most recent Euro ties."
