Injury blow for United ace
Speed merchant winger Gary Mackay-Steven faces up to six weeks out of action and could need surgery.
The 21-year-old missed Dundee United's derby win over their city rivals on Sunday with a knee injury that also forced him out of the Scotland Under-21 squad in midweek.
However, manager Peter Houston was hoping that simply giving him additional rest would resolve the problem rather than undergoing an operation.
"They might not need to operate. If they need to operate, it is four to six weeks," he told BBC Scotland. "Hopefully, it is not and it can settle down. He has got a bit of flaking on his cartilage or something like that. He has got bone bruising."
Meanwhile, United are set to appeal against the sending-off of striker Johnny Russell in order to avoid a two-match ban.
