Major boost for United

Dundee United have received a massive boost with the news that winger Gary Mackay-Steven appears likely to avoid knee surgery.

The 22-year-old seemed set for a long spell on the sidelines after withdrawing from the Scotland Under-21 squad last week before then sitting out the weekend derby victory against Dundee.

But having now consulted with a surgeon, Mackay-Steven has been cleared to return to training later this week.

Meanwhile, United will be missing striker Johnny Russell at Kilmarnock on Saturday unless their appeal against his sending-off against Dundee is upheld.
