Houston challenges defender

Dundee United manager Peter Houston has challenged Barry Douglas to reproduce the kind of form he knows he is perfectly capable of.

The 23-year-old defender became Houston's first signing for the club when recruiting him from Queen's Park in the summer of 2010. But he has recently being coming to terms with the loss of his uncle, who played such a major role in his own career development.

Douglas supplied the cross from which skipper Jon Daly headed a late equaliser against Kilmarnock on Friday evening.

"The reason why I gave him the number three jersey is that I have always said he's got the capabilities to play in our first team," Houston told the Dundee Courier. "He hasn't shown it an awful lot this season.

"But the best way to rectify that is show what a good player he can be and I thought on Friday his overall use of the ball was superb," he added. "He can hopefully string a run of games together and show the kind of consistency to make me give him a new contract."
