Derby trouble for United

Dundee United have major selection concerns ahead of their live televised derby with Dundee at Tannadice on Sunday lunchtime (12.00 kick-off).

Key midfield duo John Rankin and Willo Flood are both suspended while skipper Jon Daly and centre-back Brian McLean remain doubtful.

Added to those long-term casualties Johnny Russell and Gavin Gunning are still sidelined as their side bid for a fourth victory over their city neighbours this season.

"It's not looking great squad-wise for the derby," manager Jackie McNamara told BBC Sport. "A couple of youngsters could be thrown in because of that. It's about getting the right balance with the squad that's important.

"We seem to be getting hit in certain areas of the team," he added. "I always look on the positive side of things though. This is a chance for players to go and show me they deserve a place in the team."

Dundee are set to give a debut to new goalkeeper Steve Simonsen in place of Rab Douglas, who has been struggling with a thigh injury.

The Dark Blues are still without Stephen O'Donnell, Mark Kerr (both knee) and Jamie McCluskey (Achilles).
