Dundee United defender Gavin Gunning is confident his side can have a decent season despite them losing a number of key players.

Strikers Johnny Russell and Jon Daly have both left the club over the summer along with experienced midfielder Willo Flood.

However, Gunning, who has recovered from the knee injury that ruled him out since February, believes United can still be up there challenging, although conceding it won't be easy.

"It's hard losing three of our best players but the new guys will have to fill their boots," he told the Daily Record. "We lost the best strike partnership in the league in Johnny Russell and Jon Daly and we lost Willo Flood, who was a big influence.

"It's hard to tell how the squad compares with last season because we haven't played a game but with the boys we have brought in, I'd like to think it's better," Gunning added. "They are unknowns but they look like they have quality. Chris Erskine looks like he can score, Ryan Gauld has bags of ability and big Brian Graham can score too."
