United held in opener

Dundee United were held to a scoreless draw by Athlone Town in their first pre-season friendly.

Newcomers Callum Morris, Charlie Telfer and Blair Spittal all lined-up from the start for the visitors while trialist Czech defender Jiri Lenko was included on the bench.

Brian Graham missed a trio of opportunities during the opening half and Spittal was denied by the keeper after being sent clear.

Striker Graham also threatened following the break while Marc McCallum denied Neil Harney at the other end.

Substitutes Scott Smith and Nadir Ciftci then each had further attempts that were unsuccessful for the visitors.
