Dundee United boss Craig Levein wants to add a powerful striker to his squad and has asked friend Kenny Black to scour England for suitable candidates.
Black worked with Levein at Leicester City and, with chairman Eddie Thompson promising cash for signings in January, the new Arabs boss is hoping to use his knowledge of the English game to strengthen his forward line.
Dundee United have managed just 12 goals in 13 games so far this season, and will need to find the net more frequently if they are to start climbing the table. Until beating Rangers 2-1 at the weekend, the Arabs were rooted to the bottom of the SPL but are now 11th, two points above managerless Dunfermline and one-point below Motherwell.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Levein said: 'Without a doubt we need to get a striker in. I've got Kenny Black, who is going to watch games down in England and send up some reports. I like to have at least four forwards in my squad because once I get to know the players better and everything has settled down I'd like to play a 4-4-2 formation.
'We have three strikers who are relatively similar. What we lack is a physical presence up front and I think you need that in this league. I'm positive I can tap into one or two scouts at Premiership and Championship clubs so we will be looking at all the possible options, including loan deals.'
Levein also said that, since taking over from Craig Brewster at Tannadice, he has been contacted by numerous agents suggesting potential signings.
