Colin Samuel, Noel Hunt, Barry Robson.....perhaps even Lee Mair?
The talk of the terraces this weekend was all about the 5000th premier league goal and which player was going to score it.....ok, maybe it wasn`t, but the Bank Of Scotland has recently launched a new website which offers supporters of all clubs to predict who will score goal number 5000.
The winner will receive a hospitality package to the game of their choice for themselves and 7 friends, and the competition is free to enter at www.5000thgoal.com
Before the weekend there had been 4975 goals recorded in the SPL (since 1st August 1998) so there isn`t long to go before someone in the SPL scores number 5000.
It could be a Dundee United player, it could even be a Dunfermline player, but ultimately it wont be a Dundee player!!!!
Noel Hunt was at the launch party for the new website, which is to commemorate the Bank Of Scotland`s sponsorship of the SPL since 1998.
Goal number 1000 was scored by Keigan Parker (St Johnstone) against Kilmarnock in May 2000 and Eugene Dadi (Aberdeen) grabbed 2000 against Hibs in Jan 2002.
Shota Arveladze (Rangers) netted number 3000 against Dundee in Sep 2003 and Derek Riordan (Hibs) scored 4000 against Dunfermline in March 2005.
It makes a change that none of those record goals were scored against Dundee United, but no surprise that none of them were scored by Dundee United either…..let just hope we are the right end of goal number 5000, and my money`s on Barry Robson to be the man to put United in the record books!
Ex-Dundee United striker Billy Dodds is currently in the top 10 of all-time SPL top scorers, which is quite an achievement with Old Firm players like Henrik Larsson scoring goals for fun over the past 8 years!!!
Update 20th November 2006: 4994 goals scored, not long to go before number 5000 hits the back of the net....will it be in the Dundee United v's Saint Mirren match this weekend - place your bets now at www.5000thgoal.com
