The difference between 2nd and 12th in the SPL is currently standing at 15points, but that means there are several clubs only a few defeats off the bottom of the table.
Dundee United's victory over Saint Mirren on Sunday means that the Buddies are just 4 points above the Pars & 1 point above Motherwell, a fact that is not lost on manager Gus MacPherson.
"If we keep doing the right things then I'm sure we'll be safe in this league," he told the BBC.
"Perhaps because of our bright start to the season some fans have been getting carried away, but the players are not letting me down - they're proud to be part of this club."
A Noel Hunt goal was the only difference between the two teams in the relegation dogfight at Tannadice on Sunday, but McPherson wasn't too disappointed with the performance from his own side.
"Dundee United are a good team with proven SPL players, and although we drove on after they scored it just wasn't to be for us."
St Mirren have a difficult match against Hearts at Love Street next weekend, but with a long way to go until the end of the season they aren`t panicking yet in Paisley.
"It has been well explained that, when we are playing at this level of football, it is their character which is going to be tested as well as their ability," said MacPherson.
"They have proved to a lot of people who doubted them they can compete at this level, but that is not to say what will happen over the coming months, but they have given themselves a chance."
