Brewster Could Take Dons Into Europe

Aberdeen think that Craig Brewster could be the man to help them cement 2nd place in the SPL this season and take them into Europe, so they've signed him up until the end of the season.

The former Dundee United manager has signed a short-term contract with the club, which will see him start playing at Pittodrie in January.

Brewster had been linked with a move (just as a player) to several SPL clubs, including Kilmarnock, Saint Mirren and Dunfermline, but Aberdeen have beaten them all to striker's signature.

Saint Mirren were reported to be favorites to get Brewster, but Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood was determined to make sure he joined Aberdeen and has been in talks with the 40-year-old since last week.

"I spoke to Craig over the weekend and hope it will work out positively for us. Craig could make a big difference to our chances of getting that European spot," said Calderwood.

"Craig has a few choices and the biggest difference between their offers and ours is he won't be guaranteed a game every week at Aberdeen. He's been told he would be seen as back-up to Lee Miller and have to battle for a regular spot along with the other strikers."

"That's not to say he wouldn't play alongside Lee from time to time. If we had to chase a game we were losing then being able to team Craig and Lee up front would be a real help."

St Mirren or Kilmarnock looked to be the preferred option for Brewster, since there was more chance of him getting a match for either side, since they are struggling with injuries to their frontline players at the moment.

Although, Jimmy Calderwood understands why so many clubs were after Brewster, even though he turned 40 last week.

"It's no surprise there is competition for Craig because he has a great football brain as well as ability. He also has worked hard to keep himself fit and will continue to do a good job in the SPL," said Calderwood.
