No New Contract For Grant Smith

Dundee United will not be extending the contract of midfielder Grant Smith, after the 26-year-old's contract expired earlier this week.

Craig Levein had hoped to speak to the player a few days ago, but he was one of the victims of the flu bug sweeping through the Tannadice ranks.

Grant (son of former Rangers player Gordon Smith) has played in Dundee United's last 6 SPL matches, but manager Levein has decided he is not part of his future plans for the club.

The Irvine born midfielder played for several English sides before joining United, including spells with Sheffield United, Swindon, Plymouth, Livingston and Hearts.

"I have spoken to Grant and we will not be renewing his contract," manager Levein told the Courier.

"I feel we are well off for central midfielders at the moment."

He joined Dundee United on a short-term contract in September 2006 and made his debut in the 5-1 defeat at the Falkirk Stadium, when he started in Craig Brewster's last match as Dundee United manager.
