Craig Levein wanted to see a positive reaction from his players in the Scottish Cup, after the abysmal 5-0 defeat by Rangers last weekend.
Although, once again he was feeling let down after Dundee United switched off and allowed Saint Mirren to score 2 late goals to pull the game back to 2-2 with just 10 minutes remain.
However, a late strike from youngster David Robertson secured a 4th round trip to Inverness to take on Charlie Christie's Caley Thistle next month.
"I thought we deserved to win. It would have been a travesty if we'd lost because we were so much on top for long periods of the match," said Levein after the 3-2 win.
"To lose two goals late on was disappointing, but we showed a bit extra which is what I'm looking for."
"I would not say I felt comfortable right at the end, but it says something about their character that they could recover from losing the lead."
"I was really pleased that we had the confidence to keep going forward and win it late on."
Levein is happy to be through, but wont fancy playing an unpredictable Caley Thistle side in the next round.
He said, "I'm really glad we're through, but we now face a tough game at Inverness. It's unfortunate we have to face another SPL team in the competition, but I'm sure we will rise to the challenge."
