Weatherston's Snub To Dundee United

Weatherston's Snub To Dundee United

(Written by Tactful Sheik)

David Weatherston might have made the worst mistake of his professional footballing career, after turning down the chance of signing for Dundee United, to join Owen Coyle at 1st division Saint Johnstone.

Dundee United manager Craig Levein has been keeping an eye on the former Queen`s Park forward, but the 20-year-old opted to sign a 2-year deal with the Perth based club last week.

After scoring 18 goals to help Queen`s Park win promotion out of the 3rd division this season, Weatherston caught the eye of several clubs, including Falkirk, St Johnstone and Dundee United.

The was speculation back in January that Dundee United were leading the chase for Weatherston`s signature, but the player has decided that Saint Johnstone are a better prospect than the SPL club.

'I had a very good offer from United and gave it serious consideration, but I think there may be more opportunities to play at St Johnstone," admitted the misguided youngster.

"Owen Coyle really impressed me. I'm looking forward to working with him.'

'I've been playing Third Division football and I know there is a big difference after playing against clubs such as Aberdeen and Saints in the cups last season, but time is on my side and I hope this is a stepping stone to the top flight with Saints.'

Ironically, the player that Weatherston has been signed to replace, is Swansea City bound Jason Scotland - who was also a target for Dundee United.

However, Owen Coyle is delighted that Weatherson has turned down the opportunity of SPL football to join his club - who will obviously be favorites for promotion next season, after only just missing out to Gretna in a dramatic last game of the season.

"I know he had a concrete offer from one SPL club, more lucrative than what we could offer, but that he has chosen to come to Saints speaks volumes for his priorities," said Coyle.

'I'm delighted David has agreed to come here, this is a tremendous boost he felt this was the right place to progress his career.. This is a boy with a bright future."

'David has terrific pace and he showed last season that he has an eye for goal. Hopefully we can give him a platform to improve and take him to another stage in his career.'

'He is a different type of player from Jason, not just in his assets but in the way he plays the game - he likes to drift wide as well as playing through the middle.'
