St Mirren Park
Wed 26th Jan
Having come back to earn an unlikely late draw at Kilmarnock despite two of their players being sent-off, Dundee United are again on their travels with a visit to face St Mirren in Paisley. Substitute Garry Kenneth was their hero at the weekend when scoring a last-gasp equaliser after being restricted to a late substitute's role due to the effects of a dead leg. That was enough to keep fourth-placed Kilmarnock within their sights and still seven points ahead of them having played four games more. Latest opponents Saints are far more modestly placed in tenth position in the table and currently only four points clear of bottom club Hamilton Academical. However, they were actually the last side to beat the Taysiders at Tannadice back in early November, although Danny Lennon's charges haven't managed a single home victory since the month before that.
"We would like to continue our good form this season against Dundee United. It has been the work-rate and the desire that has got us through," Saints boss Danny Lennon told BBC Scotland. "We were very organised up at Tannadice and we played some good counter-attacking football, picked the right choice of pass and had two wonderful finishes. In fact, it was three wonderful finishes because they scored a very good goal. They are a good side. The likes of ourselves have to be at our very best week in, week out."
"Garry Kenneth has returned to full training, which is great after having two players sent off on Saturday," Dundee United manager Peter Houston told The Press and Journal. "We are down to the bones because of injury and suspension but there`s no point banging on about it. Everyone gets these phases but you just have to get on with it. What I will say, though, is the players have been magnificent. We have had people come in to play in unfamiliar positions, but they have got on with it well."
Saints defender David Barron is doubtful with a calf injury, while Nick Hegarty, Garry Brady and Gareth Wardlaw are still ruled out. But leading scorer Michael Higdon returned for their weekend draw with St Johnstone.
St Mirren (from): Gallacher, Mair, van Zanten, Potter, McGregor, Travner, Goodwin, Thomson, McQuade, Murray, Cregg, McAusland, Higdon, McGowan, Dargo, Mooy, Samson, McLean
Leading goalscorer for the Saints with seven so far this season.
Skipper Jon Daly and midfielder Scott Robertson are both suspended after being sent-off in the weekend draw at Kilmarnock. Otherwise, Paul Dixon, Mihael Kovacevic, Scott Severin and Darren Dods remain on the sidelines because of injuries. But at least Craig Conway and Danny Swanson are again back in contention following recent absences, while Garry Kenneth has recovered from a dead leg.
Dundee United (from): Pernis, Dillon, Watson, Douglas, D. Robertson, Kenneth, Gomis, Buaben, Shala, Cadamarteri, Conway, Russell, Dow, Armstrong, Mentel, Banks, Goodwillie, Swanson
A real boost for the visitors to have him back from the start after his weekend goal exploits.
St Mirren earned a scoreless draw at St Johnstone at the weekend, which followed a 6-1 away triumph at second division Peterhead in the Scottish Cup after the first game had also ended 0-0. Saints haven't actually scored in the league since the turn of the year. The Terrors also drew at the weekend and required a last-minute equaliser from substitute Garry Kenneth at Kilmarnock.
