Motherwell 2 - Dundee United 1

Fir Park

Motherwell 2 Dundee United 1

Dundee United conceded two own goals as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Motherwell at Fir Park, despite in-form striker David Goodwillie netting for the fifth consecutive game.

Their problems began inside the first minute when Dusan Pernis parried from Jamie Murphy and the ball struck the unfortunate Scott Severin and ended up in his own net. But a handball from Stevie Hammell later allowed Goodwillie to equalise from the penalty spot early in the second-half, only for Sean Dillon to then turn a Chris Humphrey cross past his own keeper.

Alan Gow combined with Nick Blackman on fifty seconds and though Pernis initially denied Murphy, Arabs defender Severin couldn't avoid sending the ball into his own net. Motherwell then continued to be on top with Gow twice going close before John Daly exchanged passes with David Robertson at the opposite end and finally produced a save from Darren Randolph.

The visitors cause wasn't helped when Craig Conway was forced to limp from the pitch just after the half-hour, although Prince Buaben did manage to hoist an attempt over the crossbar before the break. And they were back in the contest five minutes after the restart when Goodwillie sent Randolph the wrong way from the spot.

However, Arabs keeper Pernis was then required to turn Murphy's shot around his right-hand post before Humphrey was given space to cross with fifteen minutes remaining and Dillon diverted the ball beyond Pernis. Substitute Steve Saunders later threatened to add a third for the hosts when heading over from Humphrey's corner.
