Dundee United 4 Motherwell 0
Sat 7th May 3pm
Recalled skipper Jon Daly struck a fourteen-minute hat-trick as Dundee United scored four goals at home for the second successive game at the expense of Scottish Cup finalists Motherwell. Keith Watson added a late fourth to maintain the pressure on third-placed Hearts.
The visitors were forced to withstand early pressure and Johnny Russell, David Goodwillie, Morgaro Gomis and Craig Conway each threatened before Paul Dixon hoisted in a 36th minute free-kick and Daly's header sneaked in between goalkeeper Darren Randolph and an upright.
Seven minutes later Daly was on the end of a decent move when taking Garry Kenneth's through ball and firing into the bottom corner to give his side a two-goal lead at the interval.
And that was increased four minutes into the second-half as Daly completed his hat-trick. Dixon's cross was misread by Gavin Gunning and Daly expertly chested the ball down and volleyed in from twelve-yards.
Daly could have actually added to his tally when firstly chipping over the target from distance and then challenging a Conway cross that eventually found the outside of a post.
At the opposite end Chris Humphrey embarked on an enterprising run before his low drive was claimed at the second attempt by Dusan Pernis. Tom Hateley's corner had earlier forced Gomis to head off the line.
But the hosts were always well on top and Goodwillie's header was parried wide by Randolph before Watson's return delivery ended up in back of the net with just a couple of minutes remaining - to earn suitable revenge on his side's twice cup conquerors this season.
