Tangerines hit Diamonds for six
Sat 7th Jan 3pm
Dundee United hit Airdrie United for six as striker Johnny Russell claimed a second-half hat-trick in the Scottish Cup fourth round.
Midfielders John Rankin, Scott Robertson and Gary Mackay-Steven were also on target, while Ryan Donnelly earned some consolation with two goals in the final five minutes.
Diamonds had actually scored eleven in the previous round and opened brightly with Jamie Stevenson sending a deflected effort over before then striking the crossbar.
But former Airdrie man Mackay-Steven soon allowed Rankin to drill past Connor Fairley and open the scoring on seventeen minutes.
The home side responded with Willie McLaren volleying straight at Dusan Pernis, who also saved from Stevenson; while after Paul Dixon had already flashed across a dangerous delivery, it was Mackay-Steven and Russell combining for Robertson to find the top corner.
The Tangerines added a third just past the hour when Russell took Willo Flood's cross and struck into the roof of the net before six minutes later registering his second as he headed in Dixon's excellent delivery.
Mackay-Steven quickly added another and Russell in turn duly completed his hat-trick after Fairley had blocked his first effort as the difference in class really showed.
However, Airdrie still gathered some late reward with Donnelly rounding Pernis on 85 minutes and then heading in at the far post deep into added time.
