Tangerines storm to victory

Dundee United moved into the top six with their first away triumph of the season as Gary Mackay-Steven, Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Gauld and Nadir Ciftci were on target in a 4-2 victory at Ross County.

The Tangerines raced into a three-goal interval advantage as Mackay-Steven netted from the penalty spot and Stuart Armstrong headed another a couple of minutes later.

Gauld then extended the visitors lead five minutes before the break and Ciftci made it four midway through the second-half. County later managed a couple of consolations through Ivan Sproule and Rocco Quinn.

Manager Jackie McNamara had earlier selected Gauld instead of on loan David Goodwillie but it was Ciftci who soon had a third-minute free-kick helped over by goalkeeper Mark Brown.

The visitors were ahead when Mackay-Steven converted an eighteenth-minute penalty after being taken down by Brown. Two minutes later Ciftci crossed for Armstrong to head a second at the far post.

County were then left frustrated when Kevin Luckassen stole possession from Sean Dillon and appeared to be dragged down inside the area by the Irish defender.

Graham Carey next saw his free-kick superbly deflected onto the post by Radoslaw Cierzniak before Stuart Kettlewell also headed against the woodwork.

But the visitors were out for sight as the lively Gauld seized onto Armstrong's pass and fired past Brown close to the break.

Turkish forward Ciftci missed a chance to add a fourth until finally getting the reward his performance deserved from Gauld's threaded pass midway through the second period.

Sproule pulled one back for the home side with a deflected effort on 72 minutes before Carey crossed for Quinn to head another and restore a little pride.
