Tangerines move into second

Dundee United moved into second place in the table courtesy of Gary Mackay-Steven's 69th minute winner against Ross County.

Mackay-Steven was on the end of a decent move midway through the second-half as the hosts dominated for long stages in their search for a sixth consecutive victory.

Ryan Gauld had gone close with an early header and was then denied by the challenge of former United defender Brian McLean before Brian Graham cleared the target.

Graham Carey was wide with a header at the other end before his free-kick bounced high over goalkeeper Radoslaw Cierzniak and against the crossbar.

Home striker Graham then headed Stuart Armstrong's cross straight at Michael Fraser before repeating the act after a fine break by Mark Wilson, while Melvin De Leeuw drilled narrowly wide in reply.

Midfield duo John Rankin and Armstrong were similarly wide from distance following the break and Fraser superbly kept out a header from substitute Nadir Ciftci.

However, Fraser was finally beaten with just over twenty minutes remaining when neat interplay between substitute David Goodwillie and Armstrong allowed Mackay-Steven to finish from close-range.

Both Ciftci and Rankin tried later efforts as the home side maintained their superb run to move just behind the leaders in the table.
