United run ends with heavy defeat

Ten-man Dundee United's six-game winning run came to a crashing end with a 4-1 defeat at St Mirren.

The Buddies took a hold through first-half goals from Steven Thompson and John McGinn but Nadir Ciftci replied before the interval.

However, United right-back Keith Watson was brandished a red card after fouling Sean Kelly with twenty minutes remaining - and the hosts took maximum advantage with further goals from Jason Naismith and Thompson's second of the afternoon.

St Mirren had approached the contest without a win in their last four league games. Naismith soon drove wide before Thompson fired low past Radoslaw Cierzniak to open the scoring on twelve minutes.

Stuart Armstrong missed a chance to equalise until McGinn seized upon Gavin Gunning's slip to add a second ten minutes prior to the break.

Moments later highly-rated teenager Ryan Gauld released Ciftci to draw his side back into it with his eighth goal of the season.

Both John Rankin and Gary Mackay-Steven were denied by Marian Kello as the visitors pressed for an equaliser, although their hopes were seriously hit when Watson received his marching orders.

Full-back Naismith immediately stole in to restore the two-goal advantage while Thompson netted his second of the game just before the final whistle.
