United hold on for victory

Dundee United increased the gap on fifth-placed Inverness Caledonian Thistle with a 2-1 victory at Tannadice.

Ryan Gauld earned them an early second-half lead that was later extended by Ryan Dow. However, substitute Liam Polworth pulled a goal back with nine minutes remaining to ensure a tense finish.

The action had begun at a fast tempo with Gauld and Billy McKay both testing the respective goalkeepers while Stuart Armstrong almost caught out Dean Brill when trying to run the ball out of play.

But it was actually the visitors going closest as Marley Watkins chipped over Radoslaw Cierzniak, only for Gavin Gunning to recover and clear off the line.

Nadir Cifti (twice) and Armstrong replied at the other end while McKay curled narrowly wide following the restart after getting in behind Gunning.

The Tangerines took advantage as a flowing move ended with Andrew Robertson crossing for Gauld to open the scoring after his initial effort had been blocked.

Ciftci then sent a free-kick over and also drove straight at Brill, whose later hurried clearance struck Dow after Josh Meekings had underhit a back-pass. Dow duly accepted the invite and easily rolled the loose ball into the net.

However, teenage substitute Polworth crashed a superb reply from outside the area while McKay sent a late far post header just wide before the end.
