Dundee United took an early lead through Paul Paton but Aberdeen fought back for a point courtesy of Niall McGinn's second-half equaliser.

Midfielder Paton opened the scoring as early as six minutes but McGinn headed in former United schemer Barry Robson's cross to level shortly after the interval.

Northern Ireland squad member Paton took advantage of Russell Anderson's attempted clearance to find the bottom corner and give the visitors an early boost.

Dons keeper Jamie Langfield then went full-length to turn aside from John Rankin while Mark Reynolds deflected John Souttar's shot over the crossbar.

Robson next struck directly at Radoslaw Cierzniak, who also diverted McGinn's effort against the inside of an upright.

Ex-Tangerine Robson forced another reaction from the Polish goalkeeper before allowing McGinn his first goal in three months early in the second period.

Buoyed by that the former Celtic forward despatched another effort at Cierzniak while Adam Rooney tried a later drive without success.
