Tangerines finish with defeat

Dundee United's league campaign finally ended with a 3-1 defeat at runaway champions Celtic.

The Hoops moved into a two-goal second-half lead through an Anthony Stokes header and Georgios Samaras' penalty.

However, Filip Twardzik then deflected substitute Gary Mackay-Steven's 79th minute cross into his own net. But Celtic's leading scorer Kris Commons quickly replied,

There was little threat to either goal in the first-half with Stokes failing to seriously trouble Radoslaw Cierzniak from the edge of the area. Midfielder Paul Paton curled over the crossbar for the visitors.

Farid El Alagui also hoisted over an inviting goal after the restart following Mark Wilson being denied by his former Parkhead colleague Fraser Forster.

Leigh Griffiths was then flagged offside when converting Stefan Johansen's through pass before Stokes headed in Commons' 64th minute cross.

Home keeper Forster next superbly kept out substitute Stuart Armstrong but opposite number Cierzniak soon brought down Samaras, who easily scored from the spot.

The Tangerines immediately replied as Mackay-Steven's delivery was deflected in by Twardzik, until Commons chipped over Cierzniak after a Keith Watson slip before substitute Beram Kayal missed an excellent late opportunity.
