Dundee United missed out on second place while being held to a scoreless draw by bottom-of-the-table Ayr United at Somerset Park.

It at least confirmed their end-of-season play-off place, although it was Gary Harkins initially calling goalkeeper Cammy Bell into action.

Referee Crawford Allan was then injured and had to be replaced by fourth official Grant Irvine.

Danish striker Thomas Mikkelsen soon fired at keeper Greg Fleming following a defensive slip - and also had another effort ruled out, while Tony Andreu curled wide and Stewart Murdoch tried his luck from distance.

Both Mikkelsen and Simon Murray saw unsuccessful penalty claims ahead of the interval, before Bell turned over from Nicky Devlin and comfortably gathered Craig McGuffie's 25-yard effort.

Opposite number Fleming next collected at the second attempt from Andreu, while Mikkelsen and Mark Durnan each went close and William Edjenguele headed onto the roof of the net.

Ayr's Ross Docherty then witnessed his late shot being well-saved by Bell and Harkins headed wide from the resultant corner.

Ex-Dundee striker Harkins still almost secured maximum points for the hosts in added time with his free-kick against the crossbar.
