Dundee United's play-off hopes received another setback after a 3-2 defeat at relegation-threatened Dumbarton.

The visitors twice recovered from a goal down, with on loan Celtic defender Anthony Ralston initially cancelling out Calum Gallagher's opener after the break.

But centre-back Craig Barr then scored twice either side of a Scott McDonald reply.

Danny Handling missed an early chance for the hosts when left with only goalkeeper Harry Lewis to beat, although moments later Gallagher converted Andy Stirling's cross towards the far post.

The Tangerines responded with a couple of Paul McMullan efforts before Ralston headed an equaliser from Billy King's 51st minute cross.

However, the visitors weren't level for long as Barr headed in from a corner, until Ralston set up McDonald to make it 2-2 from inside the area.

McMullan next drove into the side-netting, only for Barr to then head his second goal of the afternoon following a partially cleared corner.
